Cold wave to lash KSA with snow, wind

A wave of bitterly cold weather accompanied by wind, sub-zero temperatures and snow is expected to hit the Kingdom on Wednesday and last until Sunday, the Presidency of Meteorology and Environmental Protection (PME) said on Monday.
The extreme cold is forecast strike the north and northwest areas of the Kingdom as a result of storms coming from Europe and America. The inclement weather is expected to move across the entire country.
Hussain Al-Qahtani, spokesperson of the PME, said this would be the coldest weather for the year. The northern areas would be struck first, including Tabuk, Turaif and Al-Jouf, where sub-zero temperatures and light snow is expected. The PME also expects wind that would limit visibility.
The temperatures would likely drop in Madinah, Jeddah and Makkah, accompanied by strong winds. The cold wave would reach its peak on Thursday in Hail, Qassim, the Eastern Province and Riyadh.
On Friday, the storm would reach the Kingdom’s southern areas such as Najran, Jazan, Asir and Baha, said Al-Qahtani.
He urged fishermen, drivers using mountain roads and the Kingdom’s residents and citizens to take extra precautions to prevent accidents. He advised people to wear warm clothes, especially those suffering from asthma and rheumatism. Al-Qahtani said citizens and expatriates must also keep a close eye on weather forecasts on the Internet and look out for any SMS messages sent out by the various government agencies.
According to weather.com, the temperature in Madinah was 20 degrees Celsius on Monday and would become partly cloudy and drop by Thursday to 18 during the day and 8 at night.
In Riyadh, the weather was 21 degrees Celsius and would drop to 16 during the day and 4 at night by Thursday. In Jeddah, the temperature was 25 degrees Celsius, and would hover at this level throughout the week, and around 16 at night.

Expats at Yanbu fish market in tight spot

JEDDAH: IRFAN MOHAMMED- Published — Monday 12 May 2014 - ARAB NEWS.

》》Scores of Asian expatriate workers selling fish in the central fish market in Yanbu are in a tight spot as authorities are intensifying inspection campaign to implement the policy of nationalization of shops in the coastal town. The market, which is largely dominated by Asian expatriates, has been under the radar of authorities to create jobs for unemployed Saudi youth.

Until recently, many of the shops were managed by expatriate workers mainly from Bangladesh and India. They paid their Saudi sponsors anything between SR40,000 and SR50,000 per year, which is much higher than actual cost which is not less than SR10,000, sources said.

A number of shops have been shut down in Yanbu with the result the price of fish has gone up 30 percent and supplies to Madinah and Jeddah have been affected.

“We are allowed only to cut and clean the fish,” an Indian expatriate told Arab News, and added that many workers are not entering the market for fear of arrest and deportation.

Some workers said by telephone that they will leave for home on six-month exit/re-entry visas. “If the situation continues to remain the same even then, our long association with the fish market will become memory,” one worker said.

Expatriate workers used to run shops from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. but now Saudi citizens man the shops just for a few hours, sources said, adding that most of them leave at noon to pick up their children from schools.

Yanbu Gov. Mosaed Al-Salem is monitoring the Saudization process in the fish market and making field visits to the site. To ensure implementation of directives, a special committee has been formed that includes police, representative from the governorate, officials from Ministries of Agriculture and Fisheries, Labor and Commerce and representatives of fishermen, according to official sources.

Sayeed Al-Rajhi, chairman of Saudization committee in the fish market has hailed the move saying that it should have been done long ago.

According to sources in the market, special teams are stationed in the market to apprehend any violator and authorities are not allowing any shop to operate without Saudi employees. They added that no expatriate worker is allowed to deal with customers, which has to be carried out only by a Saudi citizen. 《《

Yanbu to host SR65m ‘pilgrim hub’

Yanbu to host SR65m ‘pilgrim hub’

Yanbu has been chosen by Saudi authorities to be developed as a major point for Haj and Umrah pilgrims, along with Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah. Various infrastructure projects in Yanbu are likely to transform Yanbu into another major pilgrim hub, according to officials. In keeping with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah’s commitment to ensure comfort and welfare of pilgrims visiting the Kingdom, the authorities were focusing on overall development of infrastructure projects in all these places, Haj Minister Bandar Al-Hajar has declared. The establishment of a ‘pilgrim city’ in Yanbu at a cost of SR65 million has great potential, he says. This is because Yanbu can play a major role in handling the increasing number of pilgrims arriving from sea, which would ease pressure on the Jeddah seaport. Al-Hajar highlighted the new plans during a visit to the proposed integrated pilgrim city site in Yanbu. Moves to upgrade the airports and seaports at Yanbu are all part of a massive scheme to handle the increasing number of Haj and Umrah pilgrims visiting the Kingdom, said Al-Hajar. The Haram expansion project, Jeddah Airport project and metro train and integrated public transport system will also help upgrade pilgrim services. The minister said Yanbu has the potential to grow into a leading hub for pilgrims because of its strategic advantage. Its airport and close proximity with highway and residential areas in the city. “The pilgrim city also has the potential for private sector participation which can make Yanbu a strong tourism destination,” the Haj minister said in a statement. The pilgrim city, which will be executed in five phases, will be equipped with commercial centers, hypermarket, hotel, restaurants, banks, offices of travel and tourism agencies besides other basic facilities such as gasoline stations and workshops. Sahil bin Abdullah Sarur, transport secretary at the Haj Ministry, said the ministry is targeting Yanbu as a hub for land transits for Haj and Umrah pilgrims. The proposal for allowing foreign pilgrims who travel by vehicles between Yanbu and Egypt Hurghada shipping lines was submitted to the Ministry of Interior and Madinah Governor.” Prince Faisal bin Salman, governor of Madinah, recently approved SR2 billion development projects for the Yanbu port including facilities for pilgrims. The port handles more than 100,000 pilgrims per annum.
